A Sugar & Meat Approach to Chorus Growth
Saturday June 14, 2025 8:30am - 9:30am PDT
In just two years, the Stampede City Mixed Chorus has managed to grow from 14 active members to over 60. Greg will show you how they used the ideas of "sugar" and "meat" to grow their chorus while also keeping all their existing members.  Along the way he will show how these two ideas informed the key strategies and foci the chorus kept at the forefront of their development including the joys and the growing pains they experienced along the way. There also be time for questions and additional discussion.

Their mission is to train the next generation of community barbershop quartet singers.

Join Sean Huston for an interactive chat that will cover, mission, mandate, music programing, set building, utilizing talent, and long term planning. And a few comments about how they had to pivot some of their messaging for a new generation of singers.

Conflict is our Friend
Saturday June 14, 2025 8:30am - 9:30am PDT
Anytime people work together in a collective capacity, conflicts will emerge. People are different, simply put, and the more opinionated and outspoken individuals are, potential for conflict increases. The temptation is to view conflict negatively and damaging and, thus, avoid it at all costs. Dealing effectively with conflict, however, holds great potential for improving the organization and relationships among its members.

If you don’t use these five, you cannot succeed in singing barbershop. We will also explore a second Ah Hah and trap -- just because a chart is written in the barbershop style, it doesn’t mean that you are singing it in the barbershop style. This class will help you understand what barbershop is, and how to use your new understanding of the barbershop style to move from being a "notes and words" singer to a singer who gives the barbershop song its due. Cultivating Connection: Leading Cultural Change in Your Choir - Zoom
Saturday June 14, 2025 9:45am - 10:45am PDT
As a choir leader, you're not just guiding sound — you're shaping culture. This workshop is for directors and singers who are already part of a chorus or quartet and want to strengthen connection, increase buy-in, and navigate cultural challenges with clarity and purpose.
You’ll explore three powerful strategies to help your group grow from the inside out:
  1. Diagnose Before You Design – Learn to observe what’s really going on beneath the surface of your group’s culture, from subtle disconnects to points of hidden strength.
  2. Shift Through Small, Strategic Moves – Discover how visible, low-resistance changes can spark real progress and engagement without overwhelming your singers.
  3. Reinforce the Culture You Want – Build momentum by embedding new norms through rituals, recognition, and consistent leadership cues.
Whether you’re facing low energy, shallow camaraderie, or a culture of over-reliance, this session offers tools and real-world strategies to help you lead change — with empathy, clarity, and confidence.

What's Behind Powerful Performances
Saturday June 14, 2025 9:45am - 10:45am PDT
This class is also offered in Session 1.
We talk about trying to "connect with the audience" from the stage but what does that really mean? You know it when you feel it yet it's hard to describe what's actually happening in that magical moment. Explore the history of music and performance from the earliest human cultures through the lens of how it has shaped the way we connect as humans over the ages. Western science and thousands of years of religious traditions from all over the world have all demonstrated the benefits of singing together and for one another. Here, we will learn to amplify this power with breathwork, movement, meditation and playful dramatic exercises. Feel the difference for yourself as we build skills together to create powerful performances and even help us cultivate compassion as individuals and communities alike. Dress comfortably and be ready to let loose and have some fun a we learn and work together!

Staying Connected: How Technology Can Improve Chorus Culture
Saturday June 14, 2025 9:45am - 10:45am PDT
Remember all of those Zoom rehearsals? While we're happy to be done with them, there are some lessons we can take and tools we can use to strengthen our connections in person. In this class, Amy Rose will lead you through using internal social media and digital tools to enhance chorus life and build a culture of connection.

Arranging for Directors
Saturday June 14, 2025 11:00am - 12:00pm PDT
This class is repeated in Session 1: Often a director has good theory skills but is not someone who arranges barbershop music. Then when you find a chart that you and the chorus really like, there are some challenging spots (a tricky key change, some notes too high or too low for the group to sing well, overly complicated rhythms, etc) and you need to enlist the help of an arranger to make these minor edits. It can be hard to find someone for this and it can delay the learning process considerably. This class will examine what you would need to consider in order to confidently make changes like these yourself, thereby opening up more possibilities for the chorus and less time spent on those few bars in the original chart that the chorus really struggles with.

BarberTech!
Saturday June 14, 2025 1:15pm - 2:15pm PDT
How does BHS Member Center work? How do I stop my chorus' mails from flooding my email? How do I fix the volume on these tracks? What the heck is AI? You've probably had these kinds of questions about tech in Barbershop - and many more! Bring your tech problem no matter how small or large, and we'll do our best to sort it out. If you've got a project on your laptop that you're looking for help with, let's see what we can do!

And if you want to share how you've been using tech either personally or for your chorus - bring that too! This session will be a completely open format where we will cater to the tech needs of attendees.

Absent any questions, we will talk about how Northwest Sound records its rehearsals. Northwest Sound has been recording weekly rehearsals since 2017 and it has had enormous impact – from member retention (being able to catch up on days when absent) to sectional growth (being able to review teachable moments from rehearsals) to choreography and individual engagement. In this session, we will go over everything you need to get going – including the hardware (approximately $300), software (free), and end-to-end workflow (10-15 minutes per rehearsal) that makes of this all possible.

The Authentic Singing Improv Game - Zoom
Saturday June 14, 2025 2:30pm - 3:30pm PDT
What is authenticity, anyway? In this class you’ll learn a framework for thinking about authentic performance behaviour and a game for practicing it. You’ll feel what it’s like to sing more authentically, get feedback from peers, and see other people try it out, too.

Learning Outcomes
-identify the three triangle points of paying attention
-learn the predictable results of being present in specific ways
-learn and practice an improv game to hone your authentic presence skills

This class will be taught, live, via a two-way Zoom connection. The instructor will not be on campus but there will be real-time interaction and discussions in the classroom.

Warm up - what, how, why
Saturday June 14, 2025 2:30pm - 3:30pm PDT
Ever wonder why rehearsals start with a warm up? What's the point?  What's the meaning of life?

Okay, maybe we won't be able to answer the third one, but come dive in to a discussion on why the warmups can and should be the best part of your chorus or quartet rehearsal.

We'll chat about elements of a warm up, how to execute them with purpose, and why each part is important. A good warmup can help solve problems before they start, achieve your rehearsal goals, make you feel and sing better for the whole rehearsal, and help you achieve long-term goals.

And if you are already part of your rehearsal team, come exchange ideas to help refresh your warmups and make them even more fun and engaging.

A Guide to Facebook taught by an idiot!

Facebook was a mystery to me until I began working with the Evergreen Facebook page. Through trial and error, I accidentally discovered Facebook Metrics, What they mean – How to post ahead – The truth about videos- and how to increase followers. In November 2024 I started The Barbershop on Facebook (TBOF) Facebook Group dedicated to Barbershop and a cappella ensembles, it now has 1100 members and is growing. How did that happen? Join a journey to understand Facebook a little bit better taught by someone that “stumbled in” unaware.
