Arranging for Directors
Friday June 13, 2025 1:15pm - 2:15pm PDT
TBA
This class is repeated in Session 7: Often a director has good theory skills but is not someone who arranges barbershop music. Then when you find a chart that you and the chorus really like, there are some challenging spots (a tricky key change, some notes too high or too low for the group to sing well, overly complicated rhythms, etc) and you need to enlist the help of an arranger to make these minor edits. It can be hard to find someone for this and it can delay the learning process considerably. This class will examine what you would need to consider in order to confidently make changes like these yourself, thereby opening up more possibilities for the chorus and less time spent on those few bars in the original chart that the chorus really struggles with.

What's Behind Powerful Performances
Friday June 13, 2025 1:15pm - 2:15pm PDT
TBA
This class is also offered in Session 6.
We talk about trying to "connect with the audience" from the stage but what does that really mean? You know it when you feel it yet it's hard to describe what's actually happening in that magical moment. I'd like to do a short recap of the history of music and performance from the beginning of culture through the lens of how it has shaped the way we connect as humans. Then, I'd go into the research that's been done by western science and thousands of years of religious traditions from various cultures that have all shown the benefits of singing together and how to amplify its power with breathing, movement, meditation and playful exercises (drama games!). We'll spend time trying out these techniques to feel the difference in performing before and after and realize the awareness and practices we can use to make a powerful performance can also help us grow as individuals and build deeper connections with each other.

Sing in BBS Style
Friday June 13, 2025 1:15pm - 2:15pm PDT
TBA
This class is also offered in Session 7
There are a thousand things you can do with a song; come learn the critical things you have to do in order for the song to be barbershop. If you don’t use these five, you cannot succeed in singing barbershop. We will also explore a second Ah Hah and trap -- just because a chart is written in the barbershop style, it doesn’t mean that you are singing it in the barbershop style. This class will help you understand what barbershop is, and how to use your new understanding of the barbershop style to move from being a "notes and words" singer to a singer who gives the barbershop song its due. This class is for everyone from novices to experts.

Thematic Elements of BBS Arrangements
Friday June 13, 2025 2:30pm - 3:30pm PDT
TBA
Barbershop arrangers often feature strong thematic elements in their work: they can highlight melodic, harmonic, rhythmic, lyrical, or parodic devices. It may not always be practical to pigeon-hole an entire arrangement into one of these specific categories, but study of these elements is beneficial. In this course, students will explore numerous barbershop arrangements (visually and aurally), observing how arrangers highlight said elements in various ways. As such, students will learn about tools they can utilize in their own arranging work.

A Path to Real Improvement: It's always great to learn new techniques to improve yourself, your quartet or your chorus, but wouldn't it be great if a series of techniques were connected together to create a long term path to improvement?  Well, now that is a reality with the long term path to improvement approach.  We will cover culture (group and individual), highly effective music learning techniques that you've likely never seen before, stage fright, musicality, all of performance in one simple concept, vocal techniques and more!  This is a series of multiple week long classes condensed down and connected together to give you that previously allusive path to real and sustainable improvement.  Individuals and full or partial quartets and choruses are welcome.

Arranging for Directors
Saturday June 14, 2025 11:00am - 12:00pm PDT
TBA
This class is repeated in Session 1: Often a director has good theory skills but is not someone who arranges barbershop music.

Changing Culture to Facilitate Growth
Saturday June 14, 2025 2:30pm - 3:30pm PDT

In 2018, our chapter had dwindled from 20-ish on the risers to 12-ish. With the help of the board, the director, and the chorus, we were able not only to turn around that trend (currently 25 on the risers with 36 “relatively active” members on the roster). What we did to increase those numbers involved more than just typical recruitment strategies.
